The annual map collections from MapBiomas Argentina form a historical series covering the entire territory of Argentina. Collection 1 of MapBiomas Argentina provides annual data for the period 1998-2022. Each year, the data is processed again, expanding both the period and the number of classes mapped.

Key points to note:

  • All data is in GeoTiff format with LZW compression.
  • You can refer to the legend codes in: argentina.mapbiomas.org/codigos-de-la-leyenda/
  • The annual maps are consolidated into a single file with multiple bands, where each band represents a year of the historical series (the 1st band corresponds to the first year of the series).
  • The maps will be updated whenever there is an improvement in classification algorithms. The classification methodology is dynamic, aiming to refine the classification process.

MAPS ACCESS:

1. Browsing online on the MapBiomas Argentina maps and data platform: plataforma.argentina.mapbiomas.org

2. Direct download of the Land Cover and Land Use Maps from Collection 1 of MapBiomas Argentina in GeoTiff format (one map for each year) and they are compressed in LZW.

For example, for the year 2022, you can use:

https://storage.googleapis.com/mapbiomas-public/initiatives/argentina/collection-1/coverage/argentina_coverage_2022.tif

For other years, simply change the final year in the link. Available from 1998 to 2022.

3. Using public assets from Google Earth Engine with the following path:

Public asset of LULC:

Public asset of Transitions:

projects/mapbiomas-public/assets/argentina/collection1/mapbiomas_argentina_collection1_transitions_v1

4. Download data by different territories using the Toolkit of LULC, Transitions and Mosaic Quality prepared in Google Earth Engine (GEE).

*To use this tool, you need to have an account for Google Earth Engine (free).

Land Cover and Land Use. Remember to download the document with the legend codes at: argentina.mapbiomas.org/codigos-de-la-leyenda/

Transitions: These maps are generated based on land cover and land use data. The pixel value is a formula that combines the classes from the first and second year of the considered transition: (year 1 x 100) + year 2. Example: 303 is Closed Shrubland that remained unchanged; 315 is Closed Shrubland that transitioned to Pasture; 1515 is Pasture that remained Pasture, etc. Remember to download the document with the legend codes at: argentina.mapbiomas.org/codigos-de-la-leyenda/

ATTENTION: In the first collection of Argentina, we worked based on 5 operational regions with different levels of detail in terms of number of classes mapped and different periods mapped. In three regions, the maps cover a longer period than available in this integration. In turn, the integration process involved the aggregation of classes. It is not recommended to work on overlapping regions with the maps separately. For more information access the ATBD
